Can Smith Stop Johnson at the 2008 Toyota AMA Arenacross Series Finals at Green Bay in 2 Weeks.
Heading up the Toyota AMA Arenacross Series points chase through 15 rounds were Chad Johnson and Kelly Smith (Monster/Babbitt’s/Kawasaki) who were basically deadlocked in points (316-307). But three weeks ago, which could quite possibly go down as the turning point of the 2007-’08 Toyota AMA Arenacross Series season, Chad Johnson stepped up and threw two knockout blows – putting Smith and his teammate Brock Sellards on the dirt canvas with his 1-1 performance in Pikeville, Ky. The move blew up the nine-point lead Chad Johnson had a couple weeks ago to a 33-point lead heading into Denver this past weekend. And while Smith, who won on Friday in Denver and Sellards (Saturday’s winner) both rode strong, Johnson still enjoys a 30-point lead over 2nd place Smith heading into Green Bay.
50 points are up for grabs in the final weekend and anything can happen at the Resch Center. Don’t miss your chance to see Toyota AMA Arenacross Series history when the 2008 Toyota AMA Arenacross Class champion is crowned.

Canard Wins Indy Lites Class
Torco Fuels Honda’s Trey Canard, of Elk City, Okla., won his second consecutive Eastern Regional AMA Supercross Lites class race and leads the points standings.

Canard opened the AMA Supercross Lites class main event by winning the $1,000 Progressive Holeshot Award with Pro Circuit Kawasaki’s Branden Jesseman, of New Brighton, Pa., and Pro Circuit Kawasaki’s Ryan Villopoto, of Poulsbo, Wash., in second and third respectively.

Villopoto moved into second place on lap two, passing Jesseman. While attempting to pass Canard for the lead on lap five, Villopoto caused the two to crash, giving the lead to Jesseman. Canard re-mounted in second place while Villopoto dropped to eighth place. On lap seven, Jesseman crashed and handed the lead back to Canard.

After charging through the field, Villopoto passed Rockstar Suzuki’s Nico Izzi, of Saint Claire Mich., for the second place position.  It was the first podium finish of Izzi’s career.

“I received a couple presents out there tonight with Jesseman crashing,” said Canard. “I tried to ride hard and smart, but I am really excited about this win. These last two weeks have been amazing.”
